What is the Carthusian Horse
My foundation stallion VA Ardiendo is bred nearly exclusively of Cathusian bloodlines (Aprox 95%) The Carthusian Andalusian is considered the oldest and purest strain of Andalusians. Specific breeding of the Spanish Carthusian horse began with the Cartujano Monks, as long ago as in the 1400’s. The Carthusian monks utilized their intuition in their selective breeding process; and were among the first people to keep records of breeding. They passionately guarded the bloodlines they created; even refusing a royal order to introduce Neapolitan and central European horses into their stock. Today, roughly 82% of the Pura Raza Espanola (PRE) population in Spain contains Cartujano blood. But there are less than 3% pure blood Cartujano horses within the PRE population.
